Who We Are
Melbourne Midwifery Collective is a directory of Midwives who are working together & have a shared philosophy of keeping birth normal.
MMC consist of experienced, self-employed Medicare Eligible Midwives. We travel all over Melbourne, its outer suburbs & Gippsland in Victoria.
We provide private midwifery services, specialising in home birth & hospital support.
We offer pregnancy, birth and post birth care until your baby is 8 weeks old.
We are optimal birth specialists, supporting the physiological processes of childbirth. Waterbirth is supported and all the Midwives are specialised in providing this.
Breastfeeding is encouraged. All of the Midwives are very experienced in providing breastfeeding advice and support. Lactation consultants are also available.
As part of our Medicare endorsement, all Midwives have additional qualifications to offer Medicare rebates. We can also, order blood tests, ultrasounds and prescribe Midwifery related medications as required.
Home visits are available for pregnancy and post birth consultations. Some of the Midwives also offer antenatal appointments at a clinic.

Our Services
As midwives, we are the experts in physiological birth. We offer complete pregnancy, labour, birth and postpartum care.
All of our midwives are Endorsed Midwives, meaning each midwife can provide care to you from conception right through to 8 weeks postpartum. No GP referral is needed to access any of our services. Medicare Rebates apply for pregnancy and postpartum appointments, for Medicare Eligible Women.
Endorsed Midwives work in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, including Obstetricians as required. Our midwives can order any pregnancy investigations you may choose to have, such as ultrasounds, blood tests or urine tests. They can also prescribe medication that may be needed to treat pregnancy-specific illnesses.
Many of our midwives also offer other services that complement their midwifery practice. These may include childbirth education, lactation consultancy appointments, TENS hire, birth planning or mapping sessions and birth debriefing.
To enquire about these additional services, please contact the individual midwife.
FAQ
-
Contact details for all of our midwives are listed on their individual profiles. Simply click through to their profile and follow the links or contact information there!
Some of our midwives prefer email, some phone and some have contact forms on their website.
-
Each of our midwives runs their own, independent business and therefore sets their own pricing.
For specific information, please reach out to the midwife you are considering to discuss your needs. Different services will attract different fees, and some services are eligible for a Medicare Rebate.
-
Yes! There is an overwhelming amount of evidence that shows us that healthy women and babies attended at home by skilled midwives are just as safe as those birthing in our hospital system.
For more information on this research and what it shows, check out this research outlined by Homebirth Australia.
-
Many of our Private Midwives will support women who are birthing in the hospital setting.
It is important to be aware, however, that unless the midwife caring for you also has admitting rights to the hospital you are attending, she will be unable to provide any medical care or advice once in the hospital setting. Instead, she will be present as a non-medical support person only.
Professional Indemnity Insurance
Please note we do not have professional indemity insurance (PII) for labour & birth. Midwives have a regulatory requirement to have PII but are unable to obtain the product due to a world wide shortage of PII for midwives.
As a result of this, The Australian Government has issued Midwives in private practice with an exemption for homebirth until December 31st 2026.
The Midwives working within the Collective have PII for antenatal and postnatal care with MIGA.
The Federal Government are currently working with stakeholders to provide a solution the current insurance situation. For more information on this process and how you can stay up to date, visit Homebirth Australia.
